Visit to Amritsar: Paradise for Food Lovers
If Amritsar is famous, it is for two things: the Golden Temple and fantabulous food you find there. The Golden Temple is the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs around the world. A gurudwara made of gold, it is truly stunning to see. Coming to the food, the amazing array of flavors available in Amritsar will blow your mind away. It is truly a foodie’s paradise. Here’s a list of some dishes that you simply cannot miss when you are in Amritsar.
Langar Ka Prasad
If you’re in Amritsar, your trip is incomplete without a visit to the Golden Temple. And once you’re done with your prayers, you have to eat the langar ka prasad. This is the world’s largest free kitchen and volunteers work round the clock to prepare dal, roti, sabzi and kadha prasad for the lakhs of devotees that throng here.
Thali at Kesar Da Dhaba
Kesar Da Dhaba is one of the most famous dhabas in Amritsar that serves delicious ghee-loaded food. Kesar Da Dhaba is pretty much located in the heart of Amritsar, in fact, it is just a 10-minute walk from the Golden Temple. While here, you must try their specialty, the Dal Makhani or Maa Ki Daal, which is left to simmer overnight to extract maximum flavor. To go with the dal, order their Paranthe Wali Thali and sink your teeth into hot crispy paranthas that are served with a generous dollop of butter on top. Don’t wrap up your meal at Kesar Da Dhaba without having their sinfully good phirni. This creamy dish is served in earthen pots and is the perfect way to end your decadent meal at Kesar Da Dhaba.
Kulchas at Kulcha Land
Your trip to Amritsar will remain incomplete if you don’t eat some buttery Amritsari stuffed kulchas. For the best Amritsari kulchas in town, your pick should be Kulcha Land on Ranjit Avenue. The name may be English but the kulchas here are as authentically Punjabi as they can get. They serve fresh-of-the-tandoor kulchas with a variety of stuffings. Wash these down with a glass of chilled lassi and you’ll find yourself slipping into food-coma.
Keema Naan at Friends Dhaba
Since the first three places we mentioned were vegetarian, here’s something to appease the non-vegetarians. Head over to Friends Dhaba, located on Queens Road, for the most surreal Keema Naan on this planet. This legendary Keema Naan comes with a crispy exterior and a spicy keema stuffing. It is served with a dollop of butter and some gravy on the side.
Lassi at Ahuja Milk Bhandar
Coming to Amritsar and not having a glass of lassi at Ahuja Milk Bhandar is a cultural crime! After all, you’re in the land of ghee and lassi. Head over to Ahuja Milk Bhandar, in Dab Katikan, and order one of their thick, creamy lassis. Their lassi is so thick that you won’t be able to drink all of it, you’ll have to scoop it out with a spoon.
