DVR or NVR

Mainly when shopping for a security system, you’ll need to choose between a DVR or NVR recorder. Both perform the same function but differ in how and the type of cameras used. Understanding the difference between Best DVR and NVR is essential when evaluating security systems. In this blog, we will break down the differences and detail the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision.

NVR vs. DVR – The Basics

Mainly at the core, both NVR and DVRs are responsible for video recording. DVR mainly stands for Digital Video Recorder, whereas NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. So, the difference between NVR and DVR is how they process video data. DVR systems mainly process the video data at the recorder, whereas NVR systems encode and process the video data at the camera, then stream it to the NVR recorder which is used for storage and remote viewing. Mainly as DVRs and NVRs handle the video data differently, they require different types of cameras. Most NVRs are used with IP cameras whereas DVRs are used with analog cameras. So, it’s important to note that a DVR based system is a wired security system, whereas NVR systems can be a wired or wireless system.

DVR vs. NVR System

Both systems record video data and are reliable. Basically, in the past the video quality of DVR systems lagged behind comparable NVR systems, today this gap is significantly lessened. So, the difference between DVR and NVR systems come down to the cost, how the data is transmitted, and type of cameras.

However, Best NVR systems also tend to be quite a bit more expensive than comparable DVR systems, which is an important consideration for the budget conscious consumer. Mainly for people looking for a relatively straightforward security system, a DVR system will most likely be sufficient, especially if your property is already wired for a coaxial cable from an existing security system. So, if you need a top of the line, a very flexible solution, an NVR based system will be best.

Breaking down the components-

Camera Type- Analog

When you are using cameras for DVR system, it must be an analog security cameras or the CCTV camera. This is the most cost-saving method due to the camera purpose. In DVR system, analog cameras stream analog signal to the recorder, later getting processed into images.

Recorder-

DVR recorders need hardware chipset called as AD encoder, and is responsible for processing raw data streaming from the camera. In comparison, NVR system only requires each camera to connect with similar network.

System Flexibility-

DVR security systems are less flexible compared to NVR. The later can integrate both wired and wireless security cameras. Moreover, the DVR system carry less flexible mounting solutions because of the use of routing coaxial cable.

Conclusion

When you are shopping for best DVR or best NVR system, make sure to good research about each. Buying from the right supplier and using it by including right components will certainly work in your way.
